A bold, full-bodied Stellenbosch Cabernet from the woman who became South Africa's first Black female winemaker, and it has the structure to back up the story. Ntsiki Biyela grew up in Mahlabathini, a rural village in KwaZulu-Natal. After finishing high school she spent a year as a domestic worker, then won a scholarship in 1999 to study winemaking at Stellenbosch University. By 2004 she was running the cellar at the boutique winery Stellekaya, and she worked harvests in Tuscany and Bordeaux along the way (that Bordeaux time shows when she's handling Cabernet). She named her own label Aslina after her grandmother, the guiding light of her life. Her approach to Cabernet is to support what nature offers rather than dress it up, and the 2023 comes from sustainably farmed fruit. Look for the calabash on the label: it's a traditional clay drinking vessel normally used for beer, which she reimagined filled with grapes. This is a serious, generous red that drinks well above its station, from a winemaker everyone should know.

Aslina Wines was founded in 2016 by Ntsiki Biyela, South Africa's first black female winemaker, named after her grandmother. She self-funded the project and released wines in 2017: Cabernet, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and a Bordeaux-style blend called Umsasane. She's working Stellenbosch's finest terroirs with zero compromise. This is wine made by someone who had to invent her own path. The quality is formidable.

A charred ribeye or porterhouse; braai-style lamb chops with rosemary and garlic; boerewors off the grill; braised beef short ribs; a burger with aged cheddar and caramelized onions.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied and dry. Aromas of mint and cigar box over lots of dark fruit. The palate is bold, with chewy tannins giving it plenty of grip.
