Xurxo Alba named this Albariño for how small it started: an arroba is an old Galician liquid measure of 14.5 liters, and 69 of them, about 1,000 liters, is what he made when he launched the wine in 2014. He now makes around 4,000 liters, which is still a tiny amount. It comes from 60- to 100-plus-year-old vines in five of his oldest parcels around the Salnés, all on granitic sand. It sees no oak and no lees stirring. In other words, about as close to pure old-clone Albariño as you can get. Xurxo ferments everything on native yeast, which only around 2% of producers in the region do, and he blocks malolactic fermentation to hold on to the salty minerality of his Atlantic-facing sites. His family farmed Albariño in the Salnés Valley for generations but only started bottling their own in 2006. His cellar is in Cambados, next door to his parents' restaurant and food shop. This is the bottle to reach for once you know what Rías Baixas can do and want to see how far it goes.

More about Bodegas Albamar

Xurxo Alba inherited his family's Albariño vineyards in Rías Baixas and in 2006 began bottling under his own name. He's quickly earned respect as one of the region's most talented young winemakers, using natural yeasts—just 2% of producers in the region do—and blocking malolactic fermentation to showcase the saline minerality that comes from Atlantic-facing coastal terroir. His Alma de Mar captures maritime freshness with genuine depth. This is Albariño made with intention.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Skurnik Wines has to say about this wine:

100% Albariño from 60- to 100-plus-year old vines in five of Xurxo’s oldest granitic sand parcels
zero oak— spontaneously fermented in tank and raised there for 18 months on the fine lees
unfined, unfiltered, minimal SO2 at bottling
an arroba is an old liquid volume measure which in Galicia equaled 14.5 liters, ergo ’69 arrobas’ refers to 1000 liters, or the production size when Xurxo began making the wine in 2014 (production is now around 4000 liters)
year in, year out one of the top cuvées in the entire Rías Baixas appellation

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pulpo a la gallega, grilled sardines, raw oysters or Galician percebes, seared scallops, hake in salsa verde.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Salnés Albariño profile, deepened by old vines: lemon, white peach and green apple with a hint of white flowers, over a salty, granite-driven minerality. With no oak and no malolactic, the acidity stays bright, the medium body carries concentration, and the finish is dry, saline and long. Think Sancerre's crunch with a sea-spray edge.
