Cristom has been one of Oregon's benchmark Pinot estates since Paul Gerrie founded it in 1992, with Steve Doerner — formerly of Calera — at the cellar from day one. The estate sits in the Eola-Amity Hills, and the four single-vineyard "estate family" Pinots are each named for a female ancestor of Paul's. Eileen, named for Paul's wife, is the highest block on the property, climbing past 700 feet on basalt soils first planted in 1997 and expanded in 2006. The cool elevation and diverse clonal mix (Pommard, Wädenswil, Mt. Eden, Swan, Calera, and Dijon) give Eileen its signature: the most structured, mineral-driven, and age-worthy of the four. Whole-cluster fermented in the house style, the 2023 is a precise, savory, slow-developing Pinot built for the cellar.

"The 2023 Pinot Noir Eileen Vineyard is dusty, floral and lifted, with bright strawberry and wild blueberry tones complemented by sage and clove. It sweeps across the palate like liquid velvet, soothingly round and seamless in feel, displaying depths of ripe red and blue fruit. Tannic and long yet not severe, this leaves a pleasantly chewy concentration and a hint of violet pastille that lingers." —Eric Guido

"The 2023 Pinot Noir Eileen Vineyard was fermented with 48% whole clusters and matured for 18 months in 26% new French oak. It bursts from the glass with scents of pomegranate, red cherry, blackberry, pipe tobacco, forest floor and violets. The medium-bodied palate boasts highly concentrated, fragrant flavors. It’s framed by velvety tannins and bright acidity and has a long, layered finish. 808 cases were made." —Erin Brooks

"Eileen sits at the top of the estate. Looking west, you see straight to the Van Duzer Corridor, the cooling engine that allows Oregon's coastal air into the valley each afternoon, which has helped create the sweet spot that is the Willamette Valley. The top of the hill site was established in the late 1990s, with some younger blocks replanted in 2019, and eight different Pinot Noir clones. It has ample blue fruit and violets on the nose. Winemaker Daniel Estrin thinks this is as close to tasting the wind as you can get. It leans darker but shows an elegant lift. There's an uprightness to this wine's skin tannin and acid retention: taut red fruits, savoury herbs and mint all dance on the palate." —Clive Pursehouse

More about Cristom

Founder and owner Paul Gerrie has used his skills as an engineer and avid researcher to pursue his passion for wine. On his travels to France, he was introduced to and embraced the traditional growing practices of Burgundy which he now instills in his own wines. Use of whole cluster and native yeast fermentation allows for the fruit and land to truly express themselves and Cristom has also farmed sustainably since 1992.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Made for duck breast, grilled lamb chops, mushroom risotto, or roast venison. Also brilliant with seared salmon, aged hard cheeses, beef short ribs, or game birds with cherry sauce.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied and tightly wound, with dark cherry, pomegranate, crushed stone, dried herbs, and a savory undercurrent of forest floor. Whole-cluster lift adds spice, and the long finish is structured, mineral, and built for the cellar.
