High-slope Morey from a vineyard that climbs into the hills. Virgile Lignier has fully hit his stride; Flatiron met him years ago as a thoughtful young vigneron clearly going places, and now he's arrived, farming sustainably with organic treatments with ambient-yeast ferments and judicious whole-cluster. En la Rue de Vergy is a high-slope Morey-Saint-Denis village lieu-dit, known for energy, minerality and a cooler, more structured profile than the warmer mid-slope sites. The 2013 was a classic, cooler vintage built for the cellar, and this has the age now to show its savory, mineral side. Already hard to find, with prices expected to climb.

"The 2013 Morey-Saint-Denis en la Rue de Vergy has a forward nose with red berry fruit, leather, damp undergrowth and a touch of wild mint. It coalesces nicely in the glass, though it is a bit rustic. The palate is medium-bodied with a little chewiness on the entry, good weight and gentle grip. Still, the finish is missing nuance and complexity compared to Lignier's recent vintages that occupy higher quality levels." —Neal Martin
