You can drink Riesling and Chardonnay anywhere. Rotgipfler you can basically only drink here. This rare white grape, a natural cross of Traminer and Roter Veltliner, grows almost nowhere on earth outside the Thermenregion south of Vienna, which makes it one of Austria's best-kept secrets. The Reinisch family farms it organically on the valley floor at Tattendorf and ferments it in steel to keep everything crisp and clear. The result is aromatic and mouthwatering, with a steely mineral edge that keeps it honest. If you like discovering grapes almost no one else has tasted, start here.
