What is this wine?
Il Verro is a small, certified-organic estate in Alto Casertano, northern Campania, devoted to reviving nearly lost indigenous grapes. One of the rarest they champion is Casavecchia, an ancient red variety native to the province of Caserta, cultivated by only a handful of producers today. Lautonis is their pure Casavecchia bottling, named after the local area where the vineyard lies.

Casavecchia is one of Italy’s most obscure yet fascinating grapes, with a heritage going back centuries and flavors distinct from Campania’s more famous Aglianico or Piedirosso. Il Verro is among the very few estates committed to preserving and vinifying it, making this wine a true rarity. What does this wine taste like?
Deeply colored and full-bodied, with black cherry, plum, and blackberry layered over notes of tobacco, wild herbs, and earthy spice. The tannins are firm but refined, giving both rustic charm and aging potential.

Drink now with a decant to soften the tannins, or cellar for 5–8 years. Ideal with hearty fare—grilled lamb, game, ragù, or aged cheeses.
