Jean Foillard is Beaujolais royalty — one of the "Gang of Four" Morgon growers Kermit Lynch championed for making honest, additive-free Gamay. His Fleurie shows his lighter, more aromatic hand: old vines on the appellation's pink granite, semi-carbonic fermentation, native yeast, barely any sulfur. The 2014 was a cool, fresh vintage in Beaujolais, and this bottle now carries some early back-vintage complexity while keeping its lift. A wine that's both serious and easy — exactly the Foillard balance.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"Bright violet. High-pitched aromas of raspberry, candied flowers and minerals show a touch of licorice in the background. Juicy and pure, offering very good clarity and lift to the red fruit and lavender pastille flavors. Shows very good focus on the mineral-dominated finish, which is framed by gentle, fine-grained tannins." —Josh Raynolds

Robert Parker

90 points

"The 2014 Fleurie, matured in old foudres between two and fifteen years old, has a very intense bouquet with shimmering red plum and cranberry aromas, becoming floral with a gorgeous candied note developing underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, pure cranberry and raspberry fruit pierced by a saline seam that lends it tension towards the poised finish. What a wonderful Fleurie from Jean Foillard!" —Neal Martin

More about Jean Foillard

Jean Foillard is a natural-wine icon and charter member of Beaujolais' legendary 'gang of four'—those who answered Jules Chauvet's call to refuse pesticides, chaptalisation, and filtration. For half a century, his 14 organically farmed hectares have produced Morgon from the famed Côte du Py, with its roches pourries (rotten rock) of decomposed granite and schist. His wines are serious, lush, and utterly unforgettable.
