Cote du Py is the grand cru of Beaujolais in all but name — a steep dome of blue volcanic stone (decomposed schist with iron-rich "morgon" rock) that gives Jean Foillard's most structured, age-worthy Morgon. Foillard is one of the "Gang of Four," the growers who made living, additive-free Gamay famous through Kermit Lynch. He farms old vines naturally and ferments semi-carbonically with native yeast and minimal sulfur. The 2011 is a back-vintage bottle from a private collection, now mature and showing how seriously this site ages. This is Beaujolais that drinks like a fine, savory red Burgundy.

Antonio Galloni

"Brilliant ruby. Red fruit liqueur, cherry pit, incense and a smoky nuance on the assertively perfumed nose. Fleshy and broad but distinctly energetic, offering sappy raspberry and cherry flavors braced by zesty minerality. The finish features a sexy floral pastille quality and clings with outstanding mineral-driven persistence. Here's another '11 that nicely blends power and vivacity." —Josh Raynolds

Robert Parker

91 points

"The Foillard 2011 Morgon Cote du Py offered a more settled-down, focused, and convincing performance than its admirable Cuvee Corcelette counterpart tasted alongside. Sealing wax, iodine, and a hint of shoe polish inflect its juicy fruit of black raspberry and blackberry, which as in the case of the aforementioned Corcelette bottling are showed by their distilled essences. Palate-staining and gripping yet smooth and infectiously fruit, this stimulates with parting references to crushed stone, iodine and the crunch of berry seeds. It should continue to perform strongly through 2017 if not beyond, but given their low sulfur and lack of filtration, Foillard’s wines should be drunk young if not being cellared genuinely cool." —David Schildknecht

"Expressive, featuring notes of tea rose, ground spice and forest floor, this elegant red offers layered flavors of crème de cassis, raspberry coulis, leather and wood smoke, all backed by refined tannins and acidity."

More about Jean Foillard

Jean Foillard is a natural-wine icon and charter member of Beaujolais' legendary 'gang of four'—those who answered Jules Chauvet's call to refuse pesticides, chaptalisation, and filtration. For half a century, his 14 organically farmed hectares have produced Morgon from the famed Côte du Py, with its roches pourries (rotten rock) of decomposed granite and schist. His wines are serious, lush, and utterly unforgettable.
