Cote du Py is Morgon's most celebrated slope — a steep dome of iron-rich blue volcanic stone that gives Jean Foillard's deepest, most structured Gamay. Foillard earned his place among Kermit Lynch's "Gang of Four" by proving Beaujolais could be a serious, living, no-makeup wine. Old vines, natural farming, semi-carbonic fermentation, native yeast, almost no sulfur. The 2012 is a back-vintage bottle from a private cellar, drinking in a mature, complex register that shows exactly why this site ages like Burgundy. A wine to take seriously and enjoy now.

Antonio Galloni

"Vivid ruby. Heady dark berry and floral pastille scents are enlivened by blood orange and smoky minerals. Stains the palate with zesty berry skin and bitter cherry flavors that deepen and become sweeter with air. Concentrated yet lithe Morgon with excellent finishing clarity and silky tannins building slowly. This wine is a real standout for the vintage." —Josh Raynolds

"The 2012 Morgon Cote du Py has an immediately seductive and engaging bouquet with fine definition: light wild strawberry and red currant scents that are nicely focused. The palate is nicely balanced with supple tannins, nicely judged acidity and, as Jean himself describes it, an “honesty” that will give pleasure over the next 5 to 6 years. This is very fine. Drink now-2020. The tasting finished with two vintages of the Cuvee 3’14.” Though it is seen as Foillard’s most prestigious cru, I interpret it more as a different take on Morgon and not implicitly superior compared to the Cote du Py. Jean Foillard told me that he only releases it when he can see a tangible difference between these vines and the rest of his parcel." —Neal Martin

More about Jean Foillard

Jean Foillard is a natural-wine icon and charter member of Beaujolais' legendary 'gang of four'—those who answered Jules Chauvet's call to refuse pesticides, chaptalisation, and filtration. For half a century, his 14 organically farmed hectares have produced Morgon from the famed Côte du Py, with its roches pourries (rotten rock) of decomposed granite and schist. His wines are serious, lush, and utterly unforgettable.
