A magnum of Jean Foillard's flagship Morgon, from the iron-rich blue volcanic stone of Cote du Py — the steep dome that ages like a grand cru. Foillard, one of the "Gang of Four" who made natural Beaujolais a movement, farms old-vine Gamay without chemicals and ferments semi-carbonically with native yeast and minimal sulfur. The 2013 was a small, late, classically structured vintage, and a magnum's slow, gentle aging has kept this back-vintage bottle fresh and complex. A celebration-sized format of one of Beaujolais' most serious wines, drinking beautifully now.

Antonio Galloni

"Deep ruby. Powerful, mineral-accented aromas of ripe dark berries and candied violet, joined by slowly emerging hints of blood orange and cured meat. Palate-staining black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors unfurl and become sweeter with air, picking up an exotic touch of star anise on the back half. The mineral and floral notes come back strong on the clinging, gently tannic finish, adding energy and strong closing lift." —Josh Raynolds

"The 2013 Morgon Côte du Py has an enticing bouquet of strawberry pastilles, cranberry and light floral scents intermingling with vanilla. The palate is medium-bodied, with precise tannin on the tart cherry entry. There is plenty of tension and race in this Morgon with its lifted red fruit, though it finishes showing some youthful feistiness and needs another 18 to 24 months to calm down. Still, this is a very fine Morgon from Jean Foillard – just give a little patience." —Neal Martin

"Superb perfume – some stemmy notes, violet, black cherry, pepper – a real showboater. Superfine tannin, excellent persistence – this is Beaujolais in full pomp."

More about Jean Foillard

Jean Foillard is a natural-wine icon and charter member of Beaujolais' legendary 'gang of four'—those who answered Jules Chauvet's call to refuse pesticides, chaptalisation, and filtration. For half a century, his 14 organically farmed hectares have produced Morgon from the famed Côte du Py, with its roches pourries (rotten rock) of decomposed granite and schist. His wines are serious, lush, and utterly unforgettable.
