Jean Foillard is a Beaujolais icon, one of Kermit Lynch's "Gang of Four" and a founding father of natural wine. His Cote du Py, from the famous blue-schist hill at the core of Morgon, is his most serious and ageworthy bottling, made from old Gamay vines and patient semi-carbonic fermentation, deep, mineral and structured. The 2014 was a balanced, classic Beaujolais vintage that produced wines of poise and freshness; this is drinking very well now and has the frame to hold further.

Antonio Galloni

"Vivid ruby. Vibrant red and dark berry and Asian spice aromas carry a hint of musky earth. Sweet and incisive, offering palate-staining blackberry and boysenberry flavors and a late touch of bitter chocolate. Supple tannins give shape to the mineral-driven, sharply focused finish, which hangs on with excellent tenacity and building sweetness." —Josh Raynolds

"The 2014 Morgon Côte du Py has a very well defined bouquet, though clearly at the moment it is more closed than the 2014 Morgon Cuvee Corcelette. There is great mineralité here but the aromatics will need two or three years to fully open. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very fine acidity, harmonious from start to finish with a caressing dark cherry and mulberry finish that lingers in the mouth. This is an excellent Côte du Py for those prepared to afford it 3-4 years in bottle." —Neal Martin

"Light crimson. Fragrant and starting to show complexity – not just red fruits but also a herbal and more savoury and rocky edge and a touch meaty (but not bretty). Although it was quite delicate on the nose, it has real depth and substance on the palate. Juicy, finely spiced and super-fine tannic texture. A really complete wine, already giving pleasure but more to come."

More about Jean Foillard

Jean Foillard is a natural-wine icon and charter member of Beaujolais' legendary 'gang of four'—those who answered Jules Chauvet's call to refuse pesticides, chaptalisation, and filtration. For half a century, his 14 organically farmed hectares have produced Morgon from the famed Côte du Py, with its roches pourries (rotten rock) of decomposed granite and schist. His wines are serious, lush, and utterly unforgettable.
