Cote du Py is the grand-cru-in-spirit of Beaujolais — a steep dome of iron-rich blue volcanic stone that gives Jean Foillard his most structured, age-worthy Morgon. Foillard is one of the "Gang of Four," the Kermit Lynch growers who showed the world that Gamay could be living, serious wine. Old vines, natural farming, semi-carbonic fermentation, native yeast, almost no sulfur. The 2015 was a warm, ripe, generous vintage, giving a richer, more powerful Cote du Py that has rounded nicely with bottle age. A deep, satisfying Morgon to open now or hold.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"Deep vivid ruby. Mineral-accented blackberry, cherry and licorice aromas are complemented by a sexy floral nuance that gains strength with aeration. Juicy and concentrated yet lively as well, offering intense red and blue fruit and spicecake flavors that are supported and sharpened by a spine of zesty acidity. Sappy, appealingly sweet and extremely long on the finish, which features lingering dark berry and spicecake qualities and smooth tannins." —Josh Raynolds

"The 2015 Morgon Côte du Py has much more complexity and harmony on the nose with redcurrant, cranberry and blackcurrant leaf aromas that gain intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, ripe and harmonious with juicy raspberry and cranberry notes lining the finish. This is a very impressive Beaujolais as you would expect, although I would give it a year, perhaps two, in bottle because the true quality of Côte du Py only really becomes evident in the glass with a modicum of bottle age." —Neal Martin

"Foillard is another of the gang of four credited with kickstarting a return to traditional methods and the natural wine movement in Beaujolais. The Côte de Py slope is located on the long-extinct volcano of Mont Brouilly and considered to be the best site in Morgon, where Foillard’s 60 year old vines produce very low yields of Gamay. The resulting wine has a cherry and wild herb nose, and a smooth, full and juicy palate of intense cranberry, redcurrant and wild raspberry, demonstrating impeccable purity. Some subtle spiciness is carried by a high acidity on the long finish. Gorgeous."

More about Jean Foillard

Jean Foillard is a natural-wine icon and charter member of Beaujolais' legendary 'gang of four'—those who answered Jules Chauvet's call to refuse pesticides, chaptalisation, and filtration. For half a century, his 14 organically farmed hectares have produced Morgon from the famed Côte du Py, with its roches pourries (rotten rock) of decomposed granite and schist. His wines are serious, lush, and utterly unforgettable.
