Jean Foillard is one of Beaujolais' legends, a member of Kermit Lynch's "Gang of Four" and a father of natural wine whose Cote du Py is a reference point for living, no-makeup Beaujolais. Cote du Py is the famous blue-schist hilltop at the heart of Morgon, and this old-vine bottling is Foillard's deepest, most structured and ageworthy wine, made from old Gamay via patient semi-carbonic fermentation. The 2016 was an excellent, well-balanced vintage; this is drinking beautifully now and has the structure to keep improving for years.

"The 2016 Morgon Côte du Py is strikingly good, one of the best renditions of this benchmark cuvée in the last decade—in fact, I’ve already consumed the better part of a case. The wine bursts from the glass with a striking bouquet of rose petals, wild berries, dark chocolate and candied violets that’s beautifully projected and defined. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with an ample core of juicy fruit, melting tannins and a long, stony finish. For half a century, his 14 organically farmed hectares have produced Morgon from the famed Côte du Py, with its roches pourries (rotten rock) of decomposed granite and schist.
