Cuvee 3.14 is Jean Foillard's prestige bottling — a small selection from his oldest Cote du Py vines (roughly a century old, the pi-inspired name a nod to their venerable age) given extra time in old oak. Foillard is one of the "Gang of Four," the growers who made living, additive-free Beaujolais a movement through Kermit Lynch. Natural farming, semi-carbonic fermentation, native yeast, minimal sulfur. The 2014 came from a cool, classic vintage, and this is the most ambitious, structured wine in the range — now showing early mature complexity over its bright fruit. A serious Morgon for a special table.

"Deep ruby. Pungent, highly expressive blue fruit, floral pastille and smoky mineral aromas show outstanding clarity and definition, with a hint of licorice in the background. Stains the palate with intense boysenberry, cherry compote and violet flavors that are energized by juicy acidity and a jolt of white pepper. Densely packed but energetic as well, finishing with remarkable vibrancy and lingering blue fruit, spicecake and mineral qualities. A monument of a monumental vintage and structured to age with ease." —Josh Raynolds

"Jean-Foillard's 2014 Morgon Cuvée 3.14 is a lovely wine that won't disappoint followers of this cuvée, wafting from the glass with notes of red-black fruit, smoke, iodine, rose petal and subtle reduction that dissipates as the wine sits in the glass. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and beautifully transparent, with understated depth at the core, succulent acids and deliciously pure and stony finish. No Cuvée 3.14—an old-vine selection from the celebrated Côte du Py—was produced in the 2015 vintage, so stock up while you can." —William Kelley

More about Jean Foillard

Jean Foillard is a natural-wine icon and charter member of Beaujolais' legendary 'gang of four'—those who answered Jules Chauvet's call to refuse pesticides, chaptalisation, and filtration. For half a century, his 14 organically farmed hectares have produced Morgon from the famed Côte du Py, with its roches pourries (rotten rock) of decomposed granite and schist. His wines are serious, lush, and utterly unforgettable.
