Jean-Luc Jamet's entry-level Northern Rhone Syrah, 100% Syrah off the granite and mica-schist hillsides flanking Cote-Rotie, from the 2013 vintage. This is the wine where Jamet's fresh, floral signature shows most clearly: earlier-picked fruit, wild yeasts, and a focus on lift and crunch over heft. Jamet split from his brother in 2013 to build his own domaine on the family's legendary vines, and even his everyday bottling carries that pedigree. Cooler 2013 leans toward the bright, peppery end of the spectrum. A delicious, honest pour and one of the Rhone's best-kept secrets.

Antonio Galloni

88 points

"Bright violet color. Lively red and dark berry scents and flavors show a hint of jamminess. Fruity and silky in texture, with good back-end punch and cling. I find no tannins here that could get in the way of easy drinking. Jamet showed me the 1998 version of this, blind, and I was stunned by its youthfulness. It's drinking like a wine that's a decade younger, when you take its category into account, and it made me wonder about my drinking window guesstimate for the 2013." —Josh Raynolds

More about Jean-Luc Jamet

The Jamet name means Côte-Rôtie, and Jean-Luc splits from his brother's traditionalism by using less whole-bunch fermentation—about 30%—to emphasize floral elements and vitality. Eight hectares of mixed granite, schist, and sand soils high above Ampuis yield Côte-Rôties that feel fresh and alive.
