This is Cote-Rotie pedigree without the Cote-Rotie price tag. Jean-Luc Jamet broke off from his family's legendary estate in 2013 to build his own domaine, and his Cotes-du-Rhone comes from young Syrah vines grown on the same clay-and-schist hillside soils just outside the famous appellation. It's pure Northern Rhone Syrah at a fraction of what the grand bottlings cost. The 2014 was a cooler, fresher vintage in the Rhone, so this leans toward the peppery, lifted side of Syrah rather than blockbuster ripeness. Now well into maturity, it should be drunk over the next year or two.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"Opaque ruby. Fresh black raspberry, cassis, olive and peppery spices on the fragrant nose. Lively and expansive in the mouth, offering juicy, spice-tinged dark berry flavors and a touch of candied violet. Displays an attractive marriage of richness and finesse, with sneaky tannins adding shape to a very long, penetrating finish. This suave wine could easily pass for a Côte-Rôtie." —Josh Raynolds

More about Jean-Luc Jamet

The Jamet name means Côte-Rôtie, and Jean-Luc splits from his brother's traditionalism by using less whole-bunch fermentation—about 30%—to emphasize floral elements and vitality. Eight hectares of mixed granite, schist, and sand soils high above Ampuis yield Côte-Rôties that feel fresh and alive.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled lamb chops, herb-roasted chicken, sausages with lentils, or a peppercorn-crusted steak.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied Syrah with black pepper, dark berry and savory, smoky notes. Fully mature, so the tannins have softened and earthy, leathery complexity has come forward. Drink now.
