Aurélien Laherte represents the new wave of small-scale, terroir-focused Champagne makers. This Extra Brut blend of 60% Meunier, 30% Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir gains complexity from 50% reserve wine and extended time on the lees. Beautifully balanced between ripe red fruit and earthy minerality, with lemon peel and a salty freshness that lingers. Minimal dosage (4.5 g/l) lets the chalk-driven terroir shine through.

Antonio Galloni

89 points

"The NV (2022) Extra Brut Ultradition is laced with crushed flowers, mint, chamomile, dried herbs and almond. Lifted and aromatic, the 2022-base Ultradition caresses the palate. This is a soft, understated style for Laherte, but it works nicely. Time in the glass fleshes out the contours, adding to the wine's immediacy and overall appeal. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Multiple disgorgements throughout the year." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

91 points

"Disgorged in June 2024 with a dosage of four grams per liter, Laherte’s latest NV Extra-Brut Ultradition (2021 base) is produced from equal parts estate-grown and purchased fruit, sourced from the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay, Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs. Based on the 2021 vintage and incorporating 55% reserve wines from 2020 and 2019, this cuvée is composed of 60% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir. It opens in the glass to reveal expressive aromas of pear, brioche and orange zest. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and vibrant, marrying finesse with persistence, laden with mouthwatering acidity and culminating in a long, resonant finish. With an annual production of 70,000 bottles, this is the estate’s largest, most important cuvée." —Kristaps Karklins

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
