Most Viré-Clessé gets drunk within a few years of the vintage, so a 2010 from Dominique Lafon's Mâconnais domaine is a real curiosity: a chance to see what this Chardonnay looks like after more than a decade in bottle. Lafon founded Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon in 1999. First he had to persuade a family of more than thirty members to invest outside the Côte d'Or, and he brought biodynamic farming with him. Caroline Gon joined soon after and has been head winemaker ever since. The house makes this cuvée from about six hectares of parcels in the commune of Viré. They sit mid-slope on a 15% east-facing incline at roughly 250 metres, on clay-limestone over limestone bedrock, with vines planted between 1950 and 1990. The domaine treats once-overlooked Mâconnais parcels the way most producers treat premier crus, and that ambition is what makes an older bottle worth opening. The label is distressed, which will bother collectors more than anyone planning to pull the cork.
