Founded in 1996 by brothers Nick and Andy Peay, this Far West Sonoma Coast producer sits just four miles from the Pacific, on a 53-acre hilltop vineyard anchored in ancient marine soils teeming with scallop and nautilus fossils. The brothers' philosophy is singular: wines transparent to site—wines that could only come from this place. Certified organic farmers, they believe the vineyard should speak above all else.

This 2014 Ama Estate Pinot Noir (the name means 'the land' in Kashaya) captures that philosophy. Using four clones—focused on two—planted in 2001 and 2002, Ama finds its own voice between Peay's Pomarium (muscular) and Scallop Shelf (intellectual) expressions. The 2014 vintage was a triumph for Pinot Noir—a drought year that delivered ripe, concentrated fruit with surprising liveliness and acidity. At 12 years old, this wine shows mid-palate character and elegance, drinking well now but capable of further evolution. The marine mineral core—a signature of these ancient soils—threads through the wine, anchoring the red-fruit character in place. Pair with roasted duck or herb-crusted lamb; the wine's structure and fruit intensity reward substantial dishes.

Antonio Galloni

"Peay's 2014 Pinot Noir Estate Ama comes across as bold, ripe and intensely fruity. Sweet red cherry, hard candy cranberry, mint and spice notes are all pushed forward. The classic mid-weight Peay structure comes through, but, even so, this is an especially racy, flamboyant style. Time in the glass helps the wine come together nicely." —Antonio Galloni

More about Peay Vineyards

Vanessa Wong left Peter Michael Winery in 2001 to start Peay Vineyards with her husband Nick (and brother Andy handling business). Their 53-acre hilltop vineyard sits in the far northwestern corner of West Sonoma Coast, four miles from the Pacific, at Sea Ranch. 34 acres of Pinot Noir, eight of Syrah, seven of Chardonnay, plus Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne. Certified organic, serious about complexity, aging-worthy. Wong's resume (Lafite-Rothschild, Jean Gros, Hirsch) says everything about the level.

Tasting Profile

Red fruits (cherry, plum) with a marine mineral core from ancient soils. Medium-bodied with fine, elegant tannins and lively acidity from the cool-climate vintage. The mid-palate shows complexity and focus, with a long finish reflecting old-vine depth and balanced ripeness.
