Twelve years on, Peay's La Bruma Syrah has settled into the gear that makes this bottling worth cellaring in the first place: less black-fruit muscle, more savory dimension, the lavender and smoked-meat tones that good cool-climate Syrah grows into. The estate sits at the far northwestern edge of the West Sonoma Coast โ€” four miles from the ocean, fog-cooled, slow to ripen โ€” and Vanessa Wong (Nick Peay's wife and winemaker since day one) has always treated this wine with northern-Rhรดne restraint: destemmed, aged in old French oak, allowed to be itself. The 2014 vintage was a sunny, fairly even year along the coast, and the wine is drinking with poise right now, with the kind of secondary complexity that justifies patience.

Rich, powerful and deeply expressive, La Bruma is super-pedigreed. Red-toned fruit and prominent floral notes distinguish it from the darker, wilder Les Titans Syrah. Vanessa Wong left Peter Michael Winery in 2001 to start Peay Vineyards with her husband Nick (and brother Andy handling business). Their 53-acre hilltop vineyard sits in the far northwestern corner of West Sonoma Coast, four miles from the Pacific, at Sea Ranch. 34 acres of Pinot Noir, eight of Syrah, seven of Chardonnay, plus Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne. Certified organic, serious about complexity, aging-worthy. Wong's resume (Lafite-Rothschild, Jean Gros, Hirsch) says everything about the level.
