Tement is, by wide agreement, one of Austria's very best estates, and the family has made Sauvignon Blanc into something profound in the steep hills of southern Styria. Zieregg is their grand cru, a vineyard sitting atop an ancient coral reef of limestone and marl right on the Slovenian border. 'Kar' is a cooler parcel within it, named in the local dialect for its chilly microclimate, planted to 30-year-old vines on calcareous soils. Spontaneously fermented and aged a long stretch in used oak, this is Sauvignon Blanc as serious, age-worthy white wine. Chalky, precise, and built to develop in the cellar.

"From blue marls with a high share of calcium and magnesium and aged in doppelstücks (2,400 liters), the 2022 Ried Zieregg Kår GSTK is spectacularly deep, intense and ripe on the saline and enormously mineral as well as lemony (and yeasty) nose. Full-bodied, enormously saline and mineral on the palate, this is an intense and bitter, all in all still abstract but tensioned and saline or mineral Ziregg with huge complexity and aging potential.
