What if we told you that you could help out-of-work restaurant employees — the servers, bussers, cooks and more, who have lovingly taken care of you for decades — simply by drinking delicious and well-made wine?
We've partnered with one of our favorite small importers, Olé & Obrigado, a boutique importer of Spanish and Portugueuse wines. With a focus on the classics, they bring the Iberian peninsula and all of its treasures directly to us.
We're offering a few of our favorites as a set, with 50% of the profits going directly to the Restaurant Workers Community Foundation Covid-19 Crisis Relief Fund. It's a win-win: you get to enjoy a classic Rioja (with 10 years of bottle age!), a fresh and fruity rosé and a minerally Alvarinho, and our friends in the restaurant industry get assistance when they need it most.
From some of Portugal's best terroir for Alvarinho (Albariño in Spain) in Moncao and Melgao, this is crisp, distinctive and full of granitic minerality. Perfect for drinking on its own on a warm day, this is also a no-brainer for typical Portuguese fare (hello, seafood!).
Unusually for a Rioja, this is mostly old-vine Garnacha, with 30% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano. It offers Rioja's typical notes of spiced red cherry, leather and pipe tobacco, with fine tannins and lively acidity. With over 6 years aging in barrel, this is more like a Gran Reserva (and priced like some Crianzas!).
It's rare to find rosé made from old vine grapes, but this rosado of Garnacha is from vines planted in the 1960s outside of Madrid. It's got everything we want in a rosé: fresh strawberry and citrus fruit, bright acidity and a crisp, mineral finish. We'd pair this with almost anything — from spicy seafood dishes to a fresh salad or a charcuterie plate.
