The grape that made the Hudson Valley famous. Whitecliff's Michael and Yancey Migliore have been beating the drum for Cabernet Franc as the signature red of the Hudson River Region for decades, and the wines have only gotten more compelling — winemaker Brad Martz now turns out Cab Francs that have collected awards from San Francisco to the American Wine Society. The 2023 Hudson River Cabernet Franc is exactly what you want from Cab Franc in a cool climate: bright red and black cherry fruit, a thread of crushed herb and graphite, fine-grained tannin, and the savory, peppery snap that makes the variety such a dinner-table champion. Cool-climate Cab Franc fans, this is required New York reading.

More about Whitecliff

Whitecliff makes one of the strongest cases we know for the Hudson Valley as serious wine country, right in New York City's backyard. Its calling cards are the three things New York does best: cool-climate Cabernet Franc, Riesling, and Champagne-method sparkling wine.

The estate sits on former dairy farmland in Gardiner, with views of the Shawangunk Ridge. Michael Migliore, who studied chemistry in graduate school, began experimenting with vines here in 1979, and he and Yancey Stanforth-Migliore founded the winery in 1999. Michael was named New York's Grower of the Year in 2015, the first Hudson Valley grower to receive the honor. Winemaker Brad Martz has worked alongside him since 2010, and their son Tristan Migliore now runs the business as general manager.

They grow more than 20 varieties, pairing European vinifera with well-chosen hybrids, and take part in New York's sustainable winegrowing program. Cabernet Franc, well suited to the cold, damp climate, is the signature red, bright and peppery. The North River sparkling range, from traditional-method cuvées and rosé to a pétillant naturel, is where they really shine.
